Speaker 1: Welcome to the Strange History Podcast, where we uncover the eerie,
Speaker 1: the unexplained, and the downright bizarre tales from the past.
Speaker 1: I'm Amy, your guide through history's strangest moments. Today, we're
Speaker 1: traveling back to eighteen forty eight, to the small hamlet
Speaker 1: of Hydesville, New York, where two young sisters, Kate and
Speaker 1: Margaret Fox, ignited a movement that would change the course
Speaker 1: of history. But was it real or a grand illusion?
Speaker 1: Let's dive in. It all started in the humble home
Speaker 1: of the Fox family. The house had a reputation for
Speaker 1: being haunted, with strange knocking sounds echoing through the walls
Speaker 1: at night. But it was Kate, aged eleven, and Margaret,
Speaker 1: aged fourteen, who turned those mysterious sounds into something more.
Speaker 1: On March thirty first, eighteen forty eight, the girls challenged
Speaker 1: the unseen presence to respond to their claps and snaps. Incredibly,
Speaker 1: it did. On unknock for yes, two for no, The
Speaker 1: spirit identified itself as a man who had been murdered
Speaker 1: and buried beneath the house. Soon the news of the
Speaker 1: Fox sister's spirit communication spread and the family became the
Speaker 1: center of a supernatural frenzy. Their older sister, Leah Fox,
Speaker 1: saw an opportunity. She took Kate and Margaret on the road,
Speaker 1: demonstrating their abilities in public seances. The Fox sisters were
Speaker 1: an instant sensation. People across New York were fascinated by
Speaker 1: their claims of communicating with the dead. It was the
Speaker 1: birth of the spiritualist movement, an entire belief system based
Speaker 1: on the idea that the living could talk to the dead. Soon,
Speaker 1: their performances attracted the attention of skeptics. Some believed the
Speaker 1: girls were gifted mediums, while others suspected trickery. Scientists and
Speaker 1: investigators tested them, but no one could definitively prove fraud,
Speaker 1: at least not at the time, But fame came with
Speaker 1: a price. As the years passed, the sisters struggled with
Speaker 1: personal demons. By the eighteen eighties, their credibility began to crumble.
Speaker 1: In eighteen eighty eight, a shocking confession shook the spiritualist world.
Speaker 1: Margaret Fox admitted it had all been a hoax. She
Speaker 1: revealed that the knocking sounds were made by cracking their
Speaker 1: toe joints against wooden floors, a trick they had perfected
Speaker 1: in childhood. Yet even after this admission, many believers refused
Speaker 1: to let go of their faith. Margaret later recanted her confession,
Speaker 1: and spiritualism continued to thrive to this day. The debate
Speaker 1: rages on. Were the Fox Sisters frauds or did they
Speaker 1: simply open a door to something beyond our understanding? And
Speaker 1: that's the strange history of the Fox Sisters, two girls
Speaker 1: who changed the world with a few mysterious knocks. Whether
Speaker 1: you believe or not, their story is a fascinating glimpse
Speaker 1: into how easily belief can shape reality. Thanks for tuning
Speaker 1: in to the stre History podcast. If you enjoyed this episode,

Speaker 1: strange historical mystery you want me to cover, send it

Speaker 1: knock in the night.
