Speaker 1: Welcome to the podcast where we delve into the weird
Speaker 1: and the wonderful. I'm your host, Amy, and today we're
Speaker 1: diving into the golden, delicious world of Manuka honey. We'll
Speaker 1: explore its fascinating history, its incredible health benefits, and stories
Speaker 1: of how this extraordinary honey changed someone's life. So grab
Speaker 1: a cup of tea may be sweetened with a little honey,
Speaker 1: and let's get started. Manuka honey has deep historical roots,
Speaker 1: dating back to the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand,
Speaker 1: who utilize the manuka tree for its medicinal properties long
Speaker 1: before European settlers arrived. They use the leaves and bark
Speaker 1: to treat wounds, infections, and digestive ailments, harnessing its natural
Speaker 1: antibacterial and anti inflammatory benefits. But how did honeybees, the
Speaker 1: very creatures responsible for making this unique honey, come to
Speaker 1: New Zealand. Surprisingly, bees are not native to the islands.
Speaker 1: Before European contact, New Zealand had only native pollinators such
Speaker 1: as birds, bats, and insects like the native bee species,
Speaker 1: which do not produce honey in the same way as
Speaker 1: the European honeybee. In eighteen thirty nine, English beekeeper Mary Bumby,
Speaker 1: the sister of a Methodist missionary, brought the first European
Speaker 1: honeybees to New Zealand. These bees quickly adapted to the
Speaker 1: rich floral environment, including the wild manuka trees. The introduction
Speaker 1: of honeybees, combined with the indigenous knowledge of manuka's medicinal properties,
Speaker 1: eventually led to the discovery of manuka honey's unique benefits.
Speaker 1: The world first took notice of manuka honey in the
Speaker 1: nineteen eighties when researchers discovered its unusually high levels of
Speaker 1: antibacterial activity thanks to a compound called methyl glyoxal or MgO.
Speaker 1: Since then, it has been extensively studied and recognized as
Speaker 1: a natural remedy for a wide range of health issues.
Speaker 1: So what makes manuka honey so special? Unlike regular honey,
Speaker 1: which contains hydrogen peroxide as its main antibacterial agent, manuka
Speaker 1: honey has non peroxide activity, meaning its potency remains even
Speaker 1: after exposure to heat, light, and body enzymes. One of
Speaker 1: its most remarkable properties is its ability to combat antibiotic
Speaker 1: resistant bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus also known as STAFF and
Speaker 1: methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, also known as mysts A. Research
Speaker 1: has shown that manuka honey can effectively inhibit the growth
Speaker 1: of these dangerous pathogens. Unlike traditional antibiotics, which bacteria can
Speaker 1: develop resistance to, Manuka honey works in multiple ways by
Speaker 1: drawing moisture out of bacterial cells, disrupting their ability to
Speaker 1: form biofilms, and utilizing its high MgO content to break
Speaker 1: down bacterial proteins. This makes an invaluable tool in medical
Speaker 1: settings where Marseille infections are a serious concern. Here are
Speaker 1: some of the scientifically backed health benefits wound healing. Manuka
Speaker 1: honey is often used in medical grade dressings for burns, ulcers,
Speaker 1: and wounds. Its antibacterial properties help prevent infections and promote
Speaker 1: faster healing, especially in cases of antibiotic resistant bacteria like MRSA.
Speaker 1: Sore throat and cough relief. Its antimicrobial qualities can soothe
Speaker 1: inflamed tissues and kill bacteria responsible for sore throats. Digestive
Speaker 1: health studies suggest manuka honey can help with acid reflux, gastritis,
Speaker 1: and even irritable bowel syndrome IBS by reducing inflammation and
Speaker 1: harmful bacteria in the gut. Skin conditions. People with acne, exma,
Speaker 1: or dry skin have found relief using Manuka honey as
Speaker 1: a natural treatment immune system boost. Regular consumption has been
Speaker 1: linked to improved immune function due to its anti viral
Speaker 1: and antioxidant properties. Now let's hear some real life stories
Speaker 1: about the power of Manuka honey. I am going to
Speaker 1: start with myself. About ten years ago, I got terrible
Speaker 1: food poisoning from eating salmon that had been undercooked. I
Speaker 1: honestly don't recall ever being that ill. My husband insisted
Speaker 1: one last thing before we packed it up and went
Speaker 1: to the er, a spoonful of Manuka honey. Within thirty minutes,
Speaker 1: it was like it never happened. Fast forward to one
Speaker 1: year ago and I had a similar incident and once again,
Speaker 1: Manuka honey to the rescue and I was fine. Now
Speaker 1: meet Sarah, a thirty eight year old teacher from California.
Speaker 1: Sarah had been struggling with recurring stomach ulcers for years.
Speaker 1: The pain was unbearable at times, and despite trying various medications,
Speaker 1: she found little relief. Then a friend recommended she try
Speaker 1: Manuka honey. Skeptical but desperate, she started taking a spoonful
Speaker 1: of high grade Manuka honey every morning on an empty stomach.
Speaker 1: Within weeks, she noticed a difference. The burning sensation that
Speaker 1: had plagued her for years began to subside. After a
Speaker 1: couple of months, her doctor was amazed to see that
Speaker 1: her ulcers had significantly improved. Sarah swears by Manuka honey,
Speaker 1: now keeping it as a staple in her home, not
Speaker 1: just for digestive health, but also for colds, cuts, and
Speaker 1: skin care. Another incredible story comes from Tom, an athlete
Speaker 1: who suffered from a persistent staff infection. After multiple rounds
Speaker 1: of antibiotics failed to clear the infection, he turned to
Speaker 1: natural alternatives. A doctor recommended trying manuka honey as a
Speaker 1: topical treatment. Tom applied medical grade manuka honey directly to
Speaker 1: the affected areas and covered them with bandages. To his surprise,
Speaker 1: the wounds started healing within days. The infection, which had
Speaker 1: been resistant to conventional treatments, finally cleared up, and Tom
Speaker 1: was able to return to training without fear of reinfection.
Speaker 1: He now keeps a jar of minuka honey in his
Speaker 1: first aid kit at all times. These stories remind us
Speaker 1: that sometimes the most powerful remedies come from nature itself.
Speaker 1: A disclaimer. Always consult a doctor before using Manuka honey,
Speaker 1: especially if you have any underlying medical conditions. I have
Speaker 1: a friend who had a liver transplant, and she used
Speaker 1: Manuka honey during a cold and it kicked her immune
Speaker 1: system into gear and she actually went into partial transplant failure,
Speaker 1: which she is still dealing with. If you're thinking about
Speaker 1: trying Manuka honey, here's what you need to look for.
Speaker 1: UMF rating. This measures the potency of the honey. A
Speaker 1: rating of ten plus is good for general health, while
Speaker 1: fifteen plus and above is ideal for medicinal purposes. MgO level.
Speaker 1: The higher the MgO wronger the antibacterial effects. Look for
Speaker 1: at least two hundred and fifty million gallons for therapeutic benefits. Authenticity.
Speaker 1: Always buy from reputable brands to ensure you're getting genuine
Speaker 1: Manuka honey. Manuka honey isn't just a sweet treat. It's
Speaker 1: a product deeply rooted in history, science, and tradition, From
Speaker 1: the arrival of honeybees in New Zealand to the Mauri
Speaker 1: people's ancient wisdom, This honey tells a story of nature's
Speaker 1: power and resilience. It has even earned a place in
Speaker 1: modern medicine for its ability to combat antibiotic resistant bacteria
Speaker 1: like MRSA, showing us that sometimes the best solutions come
Speaker 1: from nature itself. Thank you for joining me today on
Speaker 1: Strange History. If you've ever experienced the benefits of Manuka honey,
