Speaker 1: Hello, dear listeners. On a cold morning in December of
Speaker 1: eighteen seventy two, a merchant ship drifting through the Atlantic
Speaker 1: Ocean caught the attention of another vessel passing nearby. At first,
Speaker 1: there was nothing remarkable about the site. Ships often traveled
Speaker 1: alone for weeks across the open ocean, and a lone
Speaker 1: vessel on the horizon was hardly unusual. But as the
Speaker 1: crew of the British ship De Gratia approached, something about
Speaker 1: the drifting brigantine seemed wrong. The ship was sailing awkwardly,
Speaker 1: its course inconsistent, and there was no movement visible on deck.
Speaker 1: When the sailors signaled toward the vessel, no one answered.
Speaker 1: No figures appeared along the railing. The ship was the
Speaker 1: merchant vessel Mary Celeste, and when the boarding party finally
Speaker 1: climbed aboard, they discovered one of the most puzzling maritime
Speaker 1: mysteries in history. The ship was intact, the cargo remained untouched.
Speaker 1: The crew had simply vanished. The Merry Celeste had departed
Speaker 1: New York Harbor on November seventh, eighteen seventy two, bound
Speaker 1: for Genoa, Italy. On board were ten people. Captain Benjamin Briggs,
Speaker 1: his wife Sarah, their two year old daughter Sophia, and
Speaker 1: seven experienced crew members. The ship carried a cargo of
Speaker 1: more than one thousand, seven hundred barrels of industrial alcohol,
Speaker 1: a valuable but potentially volatile shipment destined for European markets.
Speaker 1: Nearly a month after departure, when the Day Gratia encountered
Speaker 1: the vessel drifting near the Azores, the scene on board
Speaker 1: was deeply unsettling. The ship itself was seaworthy and structurally sound,
Speaker 1: Its sales were partly set, the hull was undamaged, and
Speaker 1: the cargo was still secured in the hold. Food and
Speaker 1: fresh water were plentiful, Personal belongings were neatly stored, and
Speaker 1: many of the crew's possessions remained exactly where they would
Speaker 1: have left them. Even small details such as the captain's
Speaker 1: pipe and navigation tools were still aboard. Yet the lifeboat
Speaker 1: was missing, and not a single member of the crew
Speaker 1: could be found anywhere on the ship. From the moment
Speaker 1: news of the discovery reached land, theories began to circulate rapidly.
Speaker 1: Some people suspected mutiny among the crew, while others believed
Speaker 1: pirates might have boarded the ship. And abducted everyone. Insurance
Speaker 1: fraud was suggested by skeptics who believed the ship might
Speaker 1: have been intentionally abandoned. Another theory proposed that fumes from
Speaker 1: the alcohol cargo could have built up in the hold
Speaker 1: and created the fear of a possible explosion, prompting the
Speaker 1: crew to abandon the vessel temporarily. Yet none of these
Speaker 1: explanations fully fit the evidence. There was no sign of
Speaker 1: struggle on deck, no damage suggesting pirate activity, and no
Speaker 1: clear sign that an explosion had occurred. The ship looked
Speaker 1: as if the crew had simply stepped away from their
Speaker 1: duties and never returned. By March of eighteen seventy three,
Speaker 1: new US papers across Europe and America had transformed the
Speaker 1: story into an international sensation. Reporters embellished the mystery with
Speaker 1: dramatic details that were never actually recorded during the boarding investigation.
Speaker 1: Some articles claimed half eaten meals had been found on
Speaker 1: the table, while others described mysterious bloodstains or supernatural forces
Speaker 1: at work. None of those claims appeared in the original reports,
Speaker 1: but they captured the public imagination. The story of the
Speaker 1: abandoned ship quickly spread across the world, growing stranger with
Speaker 1: each retelling. Even Arthur Conan Doyle would later write a
Speaker 1: fictionalized version of the incident that introduced entirely new elements
Speaker 1: to the legend, helping cement the Mary Celeste as the
Speaker 1: most famous ghost ship in maritime history. Despite the endless speculation,
Speaker 1: historians today believe the most likely explanation involves a tragic
Speaker 1: misunderstanding of danger. Alcohol cargo can really least fumes that
Speaker 1: may create explosive vapor in enclosed spaces. If the crew
Speaker 1: believed a catastrophic explosion was possible, they might have temporarily
Speaker 1: abandoned the vessel in the lifeboat while remaining attached by
Speaker 1: a rope, intending to return once the danger passed. A
Speaker 1: sudden storm or strong wind could easily have snapped the
Speaker 1: line connecting the lifeboat to the ship, leaving the crew
Speaker 1: stranded while the Marry Celeste drifted safely away. The vessel
Speaker 1: survived the ocean crossing, but the people who had sailed
Speaker 1: her likely did not. The Atlantic kept the rest of
Speaker 1: the story. The mystery of the Marry Celeste continues to
Speaker 1: fascinate historians and storytellers because the scene feels like a
Speaker 1: moment frozen in time, a ship sailing forward across the
Speaker 1: ocean with no one aboard, personal belongings untouched, a voyage
Speaker 1: interrupted without explanation in the vastness of the sea. It
Speaker 1: is easy to imagine how quickly a small mistake could
Speaker 1: separate a crew from their vessel forever. The Mary Celeste
Speaker 1: was not destroyed by storms or enemies. Instead, it became
Speaker 1: a ghost ship simply because the people who sailed it disappeared.

Speaker 2: a minute and completely forgotten where you left it? Imagine

Speaker 2: forgetting where you parked your car is embarrassing, but forgetting

Speaker 1: History is filled with moments when the natural world behaves
Speaker 1: in ways people cannot immediately explain, a ship drifting across
Speaker 1: the ocean without a crew. Events like these remind us
Speaker 1: how mysterious the world once seemed before science uncovered their causes,
Speaker 1: and sometimes even after we understand them, the stories still
Speaker 1: feel strange. Until next time, Dear listeners, stay curious, bl
