Speaker 1: this isn't just a town with a ghost or two
Speaker 1: in the attic. This is a town built for ghosts,
Speaker 1: founded by people who not only believe the dead could talk,
Speaker 1: they wanted them to. So grab your lavender sachet, your
Speaker 1: most open mind, and maybe a salt pouch or two,
Speaker 1: because we're about to take a journey into the world's
Speaker 1: most famously haunted hamlet.
Speaker 2: Spiritualism blooms, and so do the ghosts.
Speaker 1: To understand how lily Dale came to be, we have
Speaker 1: to travel back to the mid nineteenth century, an era
Speaker 1: of corsets, cholera, and copious grieving. It all starts in
Speaker 1: eighteen forty eight in the quiet hamlet of Hydesville, New York,
Speaker 1: with two teenage sisters, Margaret and Kate Fox, and a
Speaker 1: very noisy spirit. The girls claimed to hear strange raps
Speaker 1: and knocks in the night. They started asking questions and
Speaker 1: the spirit, allegedly a murdered peddler buried in their cellar,
Speaker 1: knocked back answers. This became known as the Hydesville Rappings.
Speaker 1: Soon their home was the hottest ticket in town. Neighbors
Speaker 1: came from miles around to hear the ghost knock out
Speaker 1: yes no answers like a supernatural Morse code machine. The
Speaker 1: story made headlines, and before you could say phantom telegram, Spiritualism,
Speaker 1: the belief that the dead can communicate with the living,
Speaker 1: was everywhere. Now, this wasn't just a passing fad. Spiritualism
Speaker 1: took root at a time when Americans were being devastated
Speaker 1: by disease, high infant mortality, and the looming Civil War.
Speaker 1: For many, it wasn't about showmanship. It was about hope.
Speaker 1: Losing a child, a pairentrant, a spouse, and then being
Speaker 1: offered the possibility of speaking to them again. That was
Speaker 1: revolutionary and comforting in a time when grief felt like
Speaker 1: a permanent wound. By the eighteen fifties, there were tens
Speaker 1: of thousands of practicing spiritualists across the US, including major intellectuals, abolitionists,
Speaker 1: and suffragettes. Even Mary Todd Lincoln held seances in the
Speaker 1: White House after the death of her son Willie.

Speaker 1: As the spiritualist movement grew, its followers began gathering for
Speaker 1: summer camp meetings spiritual retreats where people could hear lectures,

Speaker 1: believers purchased twenty acres of woodland along the shore of
Speaker 1: Cassadaga Lake in western New York. They called it the
Speaker 1: Cassadaga Lake Free Association. Originally in tended as a seasonal retreat,
Speaker 1: it quickly became something more permanent. By eighteen eighty there
Speaker 1: were tents, lecture halls, and a healing temple. By nineteen
Speaker 1: oh three, they were selling cottages. By nineteen oh six,
Speaker 1: they renamed it lily Dale Assembly after the wild lilies
Speaker 1: that bloomed around the lake, and just like that, lily
Speaker 1: Dale became the epicenter of American spiritualism. The early founders,
Speaker 1: and like George Colby, a trance medium from Florida, believed
Speaker 1: they were divinely guided to the land. According to legend,
Speaker 1: Colby was led to Cassadaga lake by a spirit guide
Speaker 1: named Seneca, who told him the land was sacred. He
Speaker 1: followed visions across state lines and upon arriving said, this
Speaker 1: is the place which is kind of like house Hunters,
Speaker 1: but with ghosts.

Speaker 1: Today lily Dale looks like a storybook village that got
Speaker 1: a little two into crystals. Victorian cottages line the narrow streets,
Speaker 1: each with small wooden signs like certified medium readings today
Speaker 1: or my favorite ghosts. Welcome skeptics, we'll see You can
Speaker 1: attend a lecture on reincarnation at ten am, a group
Speaker 1: seance at two, and an aura cleansing before dinner. But
Speaker 1: what sets lily Dale apart is this. It isn't a
Speaker 1: tourus trap or a theme park. The people who live
Speaker 1: here and many who visit genuinely believe and to be
Speaker 1: a practicing medium in lily Dale you have to be
Speaker 1: tested and registered. You're expected to give multiple accurate readings
Speaker 1: to a panel often blind, and adhere to ethical and
Speaker 1: spiritual standards. It's like American Idol, but for clairvoyance. One medium,
Speaker 1: Reverend Janet Nohavic, once gave a reading to a woman
Speaker 1: who had recently lost her father. She paused and said,
Speaker 1: he says, tell her I left the coins the cookie jar.

Speaker 1: official record of the exact construction year, most sources place
Speaker 1: the building's origin around eighteen ninety to nineteen hundred, making
Speaker 1: it one of lily Dale's oldest and most historically significant structures.

Speaker 2: Fire and survival.
Speaker 1: In nineteen ninety two, a devastating fire ripped through part
Speaker 1: of lily Dale, destroying several nearby buildings, but the Leolin
